What does it mean for silk to be organic?
Even before the mulberry trees which the silkworms feed from are planted, for Silx silk to be organic, there is a process that takes a number of years.
First, the fertility of the soil is improved but any changes to the original natural ecological environment are minimal. No chemical fertilisers, pesticides or other chemical and genetically modified products are used. The chemical residues in the soil, the air, the water and vegetation are all reduced. The soil is improved by using organic fertiliser like farm manure and agricultural products. This takes a period of three years. The water and soil are then tested independently to see if they meet organic standards. The entire organic production process is checked and documented. Only once these standards are met, can the organic mulberry trees be planted.
Why does organic silk need to be certified?
Silx silk is independently certified by the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS), the world’s leading authority for organic fibres. This means our silk has been rigorously tested through the entire textile supply chain, to EU standards. That includes social as well as ecological criteria. Other silk brands may claim to be organic but do they have the GOTS seal of approval? If not, they have not gone through the process described.
Our Silx silk accessories are then made in a factory that complies with the Fair Wear Foundation Code of Conduct. Those involved in the whole process of creating our products are provided with safe and stable employment.
As with much in life, you get what you pay for. The silk is never sold to us at a discounted price and that's for a reason. If prices were cut that would mean corners were being cut. That would be detrimental to the environment and those employed in the Silx silk process.
Could you explain exactly what criteria need to be met to be GOTS certified?
GOTS is the toughest organic textile standard because it goes far beyond verifying the organic farming process to include every step of manufacturing. To obtain the GOTS “organic” label, a product must:
- Contain at least 95% organic fibre
- Not be treated with bleach, formaldehyde or any other toxic substances
- Be coloured with nontoxic dyes
- Be produced with strict social and environmental standards, treating employees and the earth with deep respect.
GOTs certification means that our products meet the very highest standards.

Can you wash Silx organic silk?
Yes you can hand wash or machine wash. Durability is one of the keys to sustainability and we want you to maintain the highest quality and condition for as long as possible.
We recommend washing by hand, with cool water and a silk detergent. Avoid mixing with other colours. Fill your sink with cool water, add a small amount of silk detergent and then add your Silx silk accessory to soak. Gently massage and clean for a max of 30 minutes.
Make sure all the detergent is out by running it under cool water and pressing between your fingers. No twisting or wringing.
If you want to use a washing machine, use a delicates bag and put it on a delicates setting, no warmer than 30 degrees Celsius, a more environmentally friendly wash. Research shows that If every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of Co2 a year, in Europe alone!
Once washed, by hand or machine, the silk should be positioned in its natural shape and left to dry naturally, away from direct heat sources and sunlight. Do not tumble dry.
